Gertrude was a member of, and held all offices in the Virginia State Firefighters Auxiliary, attending three meetings a year, and not missing a meeting in 60 years! In that organization, she received the 2010 Karen Brennan Spirit Award, and was named State Mother of the Virginia Firefighters Auxiliary in April, 2001, a title which she would hold until her passing. Because of her devotion of time and energies to this group, she was nominated and was the recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2010
