PRINCE GEORGE — Luther B. Vick, past Chief of the Burrowsville Volunteer Fire Department, died April 19 after a long battle with cancer.

Vick had served Prince George county in multiple capacities for 55 years. Vick’s service to the Prince George Volunteer Fire Department Company began April 13, 1960 at the Company 1 fire station as a firefighter. During his tenure, he helped strengthen the Jefferson Park Volunteer Fire Department Company 5 with his knowledge and experience.

In 2014, Vick voluntarily stepped down from his position as chief due to health reasons. A press release from the Prince George Fire and EMS stated Vick was instrumental in many initiatives that advanced fire protection and service delivery to the citizens of the County.

“Chief Vick was a legend in the county and the institutional knowledge he possessed cannot be replaced,” said Fire and EMS Director Brad Owens. “We shared many stories together and collaborated constantly on issues to improve our ability to protect the citizens in Prince George County. He will be greatly missed and the impact he had on the organization will not be truly appreciated for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with his immediate family as well as his extended Fire Department family at this difficult time.”
