Fire and EMS bracing for exodus of retiring officers

After he completed the final shift of a 35- year career with Chesterfield Fire and EMS in June 2013, Battalion Chief Mark Nugent acknowledged it would be “strange to wake up Monday morning and not put on that uniform.

“I’m going to miss it, but my retiree buddies say you just know when it’s time to go,” he said then.

Nugent didn’t stay gone for long, though.

Only about five weeks later, he was hired as emergency services coordinator in Middlesex County. He serves as the county’s de facto fire chief, overseeing the operations of volunteer fire crews and rescue squads in the Middle Peninsula community.
